MOTHER & BABY SKINCARE

The Q&A section below is an email conversation between Glenda and Rachel Symonds who is Editor of Organic & Natural Business Magazine.
Q: How much awareness is there among pregnant women and new mums over the dangers of chemically-loaded, conventional skincare products?

A: Awareness is growing due to ever increasing publications on the subject but I feel there is still a huge tendency to sway towards old established brands no matter what 'nasties' they have in them. Powerful advertising gives these chemically loaded products some kind of protection it seems and a nostalgic feeling that you used these products as a child and so did your Mum etc. can over ride any amount of education. Not all is lost though as the message is definitely catching on. Many professionals such as Doctors and Midwives are really spreading the word now and even as a small company we are seeing a huge increase in interest in organic skincare products especially from pregnant women and new Mums.

Q: What are the ingredients to avoid and what effect do they have on the skin – looking at both pregnant woman and babies?

A: Sodium Lauryl Sulfates
An emulsifier / surfactant. This is used in MOST foaming products. Can cause contact eczema, skin irritation and eye irritation. Sodium Laureth sulfate - considered less irritating than the above but still not great.

Parabens
They are chemicals which are added to preserve products and prevent microbes forming. These are subject to restrictions and have been linked to harmful effects both internally and externally.

Synthetic Perfumes
In my experience these can cause sickness, headaches & skin irritation none of which are good news when pregnant. It is also impossible to know what they are made from as the term 'parfum' on an ingredients listing can cover a multitude of sins

There are tons of others but I might end up writing a book here!

Q: What are the most important products for a woman to use both while pregnant and once she has given birth?

A: The simplest, gentlest and most moisturising vegetable based products. Also organic is best as it eliminates the risk of nasty chemicals. Steer clear of mineral oils as these trap moisture and can cause irritation and soreness.

Q: How big is the mother and baby personal care market? Is it growing, and if so, why do you think it is?

A: I believe the size of the Health & Beauty Market is about £27million. As to how that breaks down - I really don't know.

Q: What tips can you offer to retailers on how they both educate mothers about this and promote themselves as an outlet for natural alternatives?

A: If the retailer has an interest in the field they will explore and investigate it extensively. A genuine interest in the subject is the best promotion a retailer can have.
