ICE CREAM TEA

We are soo excited by our new Verveine Tea and couldn’t resist sharing this recipe from our friend – Sue.

She says “Just follow a basic vanilla ice cream recipe, mine is this one (you may have one you prefer

500ml/16 fl oz milk
2 tablespoons chopped basil/verveine
half a vanilla pod
5-6 egg yolks
125g/4 oz sugar
250ml/8 fl oz whipping cream (whipped)

Heat milk and vanilla together, bring up to the boil, pull off the heat, add whichever herb you wish then infuse for about 15 minutes.Seive to remove herbs/vanilla. Beat together the yolks and sugar until pale.  Pour the warm milk over, whisk then pour back into the pan.  Stir with a wooden spatula over a medium heat until the mixture is thick enough to make a ‘trace.’ Under no circumstances let it boil, otherwise it will separate and be useless.  Sieve and cool down quickly (over an ice bath if you can). When cool add the whipped cream and pour into an ice cream maker for 20-25 minutes, then pour into a plastic container and keep in the freezer until required.  If you don’t have an ice cream maker, once mixture is cooled pour into a plastic box, cover and place in freezer for about 2 hours, remove, then ‘fork’ through it to mix all up again.  Freeze again for a further two hours, repeating the forking (!!) then repeat one more time.  After the third time, it should be firm enough to use.  Enjoy!

Alternative Ways with Perfume

Balm Balm Single Note Eau de ParfumMany people turn to Balm Balm 100% Organic Perfumes because they have extremely delicate skin so here are a few ways of wearing perfumes without them actually touching your skin.

Try spraying your perfume through your hair? This is a lovely subtle way to wear perfume. Alternatively try spraying it onto a hanky or scarf worn over clothes or tucked in a pocket or between layers of clothes. A classic way to wear perfume as a finishing touch is, to spray it into the air and walk into it – make sure that your eyes are closed though – best to spray at chest height anyway.

Will Jojoba Oils Similarity to Sebum make it Comedogenic?

( Miss A Turner wrote to us at Balm Balm)Jojoba “I’ve been looking at the products you offer and have been impressed by their simplicity, versatility and price. I read through the ‘key ingredient’ information and came across this paragraph: “Jojoba is grown for the liquid wax (commonly called jojoba oil) in its seeds. This oil is rare in that it is an extremely long (C36-C46) straight-chain wax ester and not a triglyceride, making jojoba and its derivative jojoba esters more similar to human sebum than almost any other oil.”

(So my Question is) “Will jojoba oils similarity to sebum make it comedogenic? ALSO, is it advisable for somebody with oily, acne prone skin to use it?” Myself and my sister are interested in trying your products, if they are sutible for our oily skin type. Do you send out free samples? Thank you for your help. A Turner.

(Glenda Replied) Balm Balm Jojoba“Oils such as Jojoba are in no way comedogenic – on the contrary, they allow the pores to breath and help restore them to a healthy state. Oily skin that is prone to blackheads is usually caused by attempts to close the pores with astringent products which leads the skin to over stimulate. When you treat the skin with like for like ingredients it is like watering a plant. To begin with you only need a little oil but as the skin becomes more balanced it will be able to take in more – the pores become less dilated and the oxygenation of the sebum which is what appears black – recedes.

I’m afraid we don’t send out free samples but we do have a Mini Facial Kit Balm Balm Mini Facial Skincare Kitwhich allows you to try our whole facial range at minimum cost.

I hope this helps,
Best wishes,
Glenda.”

“High Street Perfumes Give me Bad Headaches” – says Claire

We had an interesting question via our website from Claire below;

“Hi, I wondered if you could give me some information regardLavendering your fragrances. I tend to find that most high street perfumes give me bad headaches and wondered if you could tell me whether the fragrances you have are heavy at all. Also could you descibe what the rose geranium, ylang ylang and mandarin fragrances are like, and if you would recommend one for someone who doesn’t like heavy fragrances. Sorry for the questions it is just quite hard for me to buy perfumes without having smelled them beforehand.
Many thanks in adavance
Kind regards Claire”

Glenda Replied;
Hi Claire,
I am pretty certain that none of our perfumes will give you a headache as they are designed with this problem very much in mind. It’s usually the synthetic & complex nature of perfumes that effect people in this way and these are neither synthetic or complex. Having said that, I would recommend that you try the lightest ones first. These are Mandarin & Bergamot. they combine beautifully with Lavender & Rose Geranium. Ylang Ylang is much stronger and while it is lovely, not as easy on the head. More of an evening fragrance – sort of heady & exotic but becomes muchGlenda Taylor lighter when combined with say Bergamot.

Anyway Claire, we will have some little vials in at the end of the month & I can send you one or two to try. We have been waiting for them for ages and just found today that the factory that makes them is on holiday – thus the delay. We will put a complete set on the website for people to try but I’m not sure how much that will be yet. As I said though, I would be happy to send you a couple free of charge. Maybe you could remind me in a couple of weeks time in case I forget! Sorry to ask you but my in box is a bit nuts!!
Hope this helps,
Best wishes & good luck with the perfume hunt.
Glenda

Looking Rough During Pregnancy?

I must admit that is a harsh looking Headline on this post, but I recently had this question from Jenny and feel it is worth sharing.

Jenny wrote “Hi- I am 7 months pregnant, and my beauty ‘worries’ are my Fragrance Free Face Balmfacial skin, and hair. It’s a lie you ‘glow’ during pregnancy-I look rough! I feel I can’t use all my normal face and hair products because I’m scared the ingredients aren’t safe during pregnancy. My skin looks dull, and my hair looks thin and flat. Help?!”

I wrote back; “Pregnancy affects everyone differently and I’m really sorry that you are not feeling like you are glowing.  One of the main things to remember though is that you become far more sensitive in every way during pregnancy and most women develop an almost sixth sense as to what’s good for them and what isn’t, so you are absolutely right to question what you are putting on your skin and hair.  This is a wonderful time and a perfect excuse to start using the gentlest, most natural products around and the benefits will pay off for both you and your baby.  I am sending you our Fragrance Free Face Balm which is made from only organic oils and waxes and you can use this all over your body as a general moisturiser and even add it to your bath water to soften it.  It is not essential that you use Fragrance Free products during pregnancy but some women’s sense of smell becomes so heightened that they often prefer to use unfragranced products.  A good rule of thumb is that if you can eat it you can put it on your skin, so experiment with making face masks with mushed up avocado or a deep conditioning hair oil with warm virgin olive oil for instance.  We unfortunately don’t have any shampoos or soaps at Balm Balm as all our products are 100% organic and all foaming products unfortunately have some synthetics in them, so you really just have to go with a company that you trust to use as few chemicals as possible.  Green People or Neil’s Yard would be a good place to start.   A great natural way to perk up your skin or hair is cold water.  For hair give it a final rinse with cold water.  If you are let feeling chilly you can return to warm water afterwards.  The change in temperature really stimulates the scalp which will liven up you hair.  For your face, splash with cold water any time of day.  Again, this stimulates blood flow which will give you a lovely glow.”

I do hope this helps Jenny? Bye for now, Glenda

New Aromatherapy Bath & Shower Oil Collection

Our beautiful Aromatherapy Bath & Shower Oil Collection is ready. It is so gorgeous and ready in time for the Christmas press as most of the magazines are doing their Christmas round ups now. I’ve wanted to do these concentrated blends for ages and only now managed to make them happen. There are always so many products I want to do and it’s tricky just keeping track of the ones we’ve got. We put an order in for our Rose Geranium Face Balm last week thinking that we had 9,000 boxes in stock only to hear today that we have none! Eeeeek! Now there’s a mad rush to get boxes made.

Back to the new packs though as I’m loving them – my friend Steph did the cartoons of them for our press release and they are so cute. I love her work.

My favourite blend from the new pack at the moment is Refresh. Mandarin & Grapefruit. It’s just so refreshing! What more can I say? Calm is another favourite being all woody and gentle and the fragrance really lingers. This one is special to me as I’ve only recently managed to get organic sandalwood. I’ll be adding sandalwood to our essential oils soon too. It’s really the most beautiful, sultry, velvety oil.

New Premises; New Products; Dill

Last week we started to move into our new premises in Kingston. It’s very exciting and great to think that we are moving into a new phase for Balm Balm. We’ll miss the gorgeous Jennie, at Intermail who has been looking after all our dispatch for the past couple of years but it will be great to have our product all around us again. We’ll still be working from the end of the garden most of the time but with the new premises we’ll be able to spread out a little which will be great.

Working hard at Professional sizes for lots of our products and Christmas Gifts along with other new product development so direction is the big issue at the moment. Haydn & I are trying to stick to a time table with slots for each project – I’m writing this during a slot for packaging so we’re not sticking too closely to it as you can see.

DILL ESSENTIAL OIL

A lovely unusual oil that is perfect for babies suffering from colic. It has a soft aniseedy fragrance that will remind you of Gripe Water, being one of its main ingredients. It soothes tummies and calms the senses for babies and grown ups too.

Tummy aches & cramps, sleep, stress, appetite regulator, nerves.

SOOTHING TUMMY RUB OIL

Pour 1 x dessertspoonful of Peach Kernel Oil into a 10ml bottle.
Add…..
3 drops of Dill
2 drops of Lavender
Halve the amount of essential oil for babies under 1 year.

Replace cap and shake before use.
Gently massage stomach in a clock wise motion.

Use for babies, children or grown ups – for tummy aches & cramps.

RELAXING BATH & BODY OIL

My favourite product in the Balm Balm range at this time of the year is our Relaxing Bath & Body Oil. It has the most beautiful fragrance which comes from Rose Geranium, Mandarin, Lavender and Ylang Ylang. All the blends in our range are my very own and I haven’t tried to be clever with this one. It is a real classic aromatherapy blend and really does what it says on the label so to speak. It is feminine and sensuous and even though it has real relaxing properties it is curiously refreshing too. You will feel like you have just stepped out of an expensive spa when you have used it. There are a few other reasons apart from its lovely smell that I always turn to this particular product at this time of year. Suddenly legs, arms, shoulders & backs are revealed and legs, elbow & heals in particular are often very dry after their winter hibernation so it is vital that you moisturise them well now if out of sight has been out of mind during the winter months. This products gorgeously rich base of Jojoba, Evening Primrose, Rosehip, Sunflower & Calendula oils are second to no other ingredients for their moisturising and skin restoring properties. Just adding a little Balm Balm Relaxing Bath & Body Oil to your bath will leave your skin smooth and silky but other ways to achieve really happy, nourished skin is to either massage it in before or after your shower or bath. Applied it all over at any time though and it will also work brilliantly to keep mosquitoes at bay as all of the essential oils I have used for this product are natural insect repellents. Not a very attractive attribute I know but what a wonderful added benefit!

Bergamot

Garden Shed

Lovely sunny day so I think Bergamot deserves a mention because it is a truly sunny essential oil and our Bergamot Single Note Eau de Parfum is selling particularly well at the moment so I’m not the only one that thinks it is perfect for this time of year. It smells so fresh and hopeful. Like anything is possible. To me it smells like expensive lemon – a tinsy bit musty but still uber fresh. Bergamot used to be used in sun tanning products to actually promote tanning before the days when we were all terrified of the sun. Anyone old enough to remember Bergasol? Maybe it’s still around, I haven’t checked. Anyway, there lies the route of some people’s fear of Bergamot, mistakenly worrying that the bergaptene element – the part that allows your skin to burn is in the oil. Well hurrah! These days it has been removed from the oil before we get access to it. So rare is it now to have non bergaptene free oil that aromatherapy companies no longer even bother to write ‘bergaptene free’ on Bergamot Essential Oil.

It was my intention to make essential oil entries here as simple as possible and I may have made this sound unnecessarily complicated already. Sorry! But I am often asked about the Bergamot and Sun issue at this time of the year and I thought I’d get in first! Of course no essential oil should be put on before hanging around in the sun so caution is always required with any product really that doesn’t have an SPF factor in it and I’ll write a bit more about that another day, especially if the sun hangs around. In the mean time I’m sritzing myself with our Beautiful Bergamot Single Note Eau de Parfum and sprinkling the essential Oil around the house & office which is also by the way a fab natural insect repellent.
